Cloth Diaper Dictionary

Are you new to cloth diapers and learning what the heck all these words mean and what the abbreviations stand for?? Look no further! Below you’ll find many of the terms that you may come in contact with throughout this blog, other blogs, or cloth diapering groups. In the parenthesis, you will see it’s coordinating abbreviation or other names it could be called. Hope this helps!! 🙂

 

All in One (AIO): Type of diaper that has it’s absorbent layers sewn into the diaper. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

All in Two (AI2): Type of diaper that has two parts- the absorbent layers can be switched out when soiled and the waterproof part can be re-used. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

Aplix (hook and loop): Velcro closure as opposed to snaps.

Boingo: Brand/type of modern cloth diaper fastener- no more pins needed!

Cloth Wipes: Wipes made out of fabric that can be washed and re-used.

Diaper Cover: Waterproof material that will pull on, snap, or velcro onto baby.

Diaper Liner (liner): A barrier material to go between baby and diaper. This can be used for stay-dry purposes in a natural diaper, a barrier between baby with a non-cloth diaper safe cream on and diaper,  or to make clean up easier. This does not add absorbancy to your diaper.

Doubler: Another insert that can be added for absorbancy.

Fitted: Type of diaper that requires no folding and is completely absorbent. Requires a diaper cover since there is no waterproof material used. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

Flat: Type of diaper that is basically a large square. Requires folding to be used on baby. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

Hybrid: A type of diaper that has a cloth exterior but a disposable absorbancy interior.

One Size (OS): Sizing of the diaper, most can be used from infancy into toddlerhood.

Pail: Storage for dirty diapers. Some people use specialty pails while some people use trash cans.

Pail Liner: A waterproof bag that goes into a diaper pail. These can be washed with your cloth diapers.

Pocket: Type of diaper that has an opening in the back (or front) of the diaper. Needs stuffed with absorbent layers in the opening. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

Prefold: Type of diaper that has absorbent layers sewn into the middle of the rectangular fabric. Needs to be folded and used with a waterproof cover. See the Beginner’s Guide Page here.

PUL (polyurethane laminate): Waterproof material that cloth diapers can be made out of.

Rewards (points): Many cloth diaper retailers offer reward points when you purchase with them. Each reward system is different but usually result in receiving a gift certificate to that retailer once you earn so many points.

Snappi: Brand/type of modern cloth diaper fastener- no more pins needed!

Sprayer: Basically, a kitchen sink sprayer attached to your toilet! Makes diaper clean up so much easier!

SprayPal: A cloth diaper accessory used with a cloth diaper sprayer. Makes clean up a breeze since it keeps water from splashing all over the walls or floor.

Stripping: Removing built up residue from your diapers.

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane): Another waterproof material that cloth diapers can be made out of.

Wet bag: A waterproof bag used to hold cloth diapers, swimming suits, etc. Especially handy when you’re out and about!

Elemental: Bumgenius All in One diaper with organic inserts

Flip: Bumgenius Diaper Cover

Freetime (FT): Bumgenius All in One diaper with microfiber inserts

Rockin Green (RNG): A cloth diaper safe detergent

Sloomb Overnight Bamboo Fleece Fitted (OBF): Amazing fitted diaper for overnight

Sloomb Happy Little Cloud Fitted (HLC): Another amazing fitted diaper for overnight
